Date: February 4, 2008

On behalf of the Gloucestershire Museums Group, Gloucestershire County Council is inviting potential ‘Heritage’ volunteers to come to one of two open evenings being held at Cheltenham Art Gallery on 13th February and at the Edward Jenner Museum, Berkeley on 28th February, between 6.30-8.30pm.

There are lots of opportunities to volunteer, in a variety of roles, at museums, historical buildings and art galleries across the county. Volunteers carry out all kind of jobs including museum curators, exhibition officers, education officer, historic house gardeners, accountants, tour guides, shop staff, researchers and visitor service staff. A current vacancy is Volunteer Apprentice Vine-keeper!

You don’t have to have any previous experience, just a few hours or days to spare and an interest in heritage! Volunteering is excellent for people looking to get some new experience, update their skills and find new friends. Volunteers have access to a wide range of free or subsidised professional training courses throughout the year, such as how to look after ancient artefacts.

Cllr Tony Hicks, Lead Cabinet Member for Adult Services said: “Gloucestershire’s heritage is rich and varied and offers a wide range of interesting volunteering opportunities. We are blessed with both large and small museums, beautiful buildings, intriguing sites, surprising galleries and fascinating artefacts. ”

The open evenings will kick start with some refreshments and introductions, followed by a behind the scenes tour of the venue and presentations by the museum curators and current volunteers. Staff from a range of other museums will also be there to talk to you about their work. There is no obligation to sign up at the open evenings, but visitors will be able to leave their contact details if they wish.
