The Cotswolds is not a Dumping Ground

Places, Features Add comments

Date: February 20, 2008

The announcement that the Cotswold District Council Planning Committee had voted unanimously to refuse the application at the Sunhill site, near Poulton, Fairford, Gloucestershire, for processing mixed food and green waste has delighted Cotswold MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown.

A letter from the MP, detailing in no uncertain terms his objection to the proposals, was read out during the evening.
Speaking yesterday Mr Clifton-Brown said “A successful application would have been an appalling decision. The site would have created an awful smell and greatly increased the flow of traffic of HGVs on narrow rural roads which are grossly unsuitable for such movement”
“Furthermore, waste would have been brought in from other Counties for processing at the site. The Cotswolds is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and should never become a dumping ground for other peoples waste”

The decision now has to go to Gloucestershire County Council for final determination. Mr Clifton-Brown has promised to renew his opposition to the scheme at this point, backed by the unanimous support of the Cotswold District Council Planning Committee.
