Cotswold MP concerned about possible defence cuts for policing at RAF Fairford

Places, Features Add comments

Cotswold MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown has recently been informed that as a result of a review by the US 3rd Air Force based at Ramstein in Germany, they are looking at the economies of all their bases throughout Europe.

A consequence of this could be a cut in the funding of the Defence Police Federation who guard inside the wire at RAF Fairford, or even their complete removal. Heightened security provisions will therefore have to be provided from elsewhere when active operations are taking place.

Mr Clifton-Brown is concerned that were a repeat of the large scale protests seen during the Second Gulf War to take place these cuts could make it very difficult to actively police the base.

The MP has tabled a Parliamentary Question on this matter and will today write to Dr Tim Brain, the Chief Constable of Gloucestershire Police to discuss the possible implications.
