Young flood victims are to get a boost in the shape of £15,000 worth of free sports coaching, thanks to Cotswold District Council.

Youth Sport Development Officer Scott Burry made a successful application for half of the money to Gloucestershire County Council’s Flood Recovery Grant fund for children and young people. The remaining £7,500 was awarded from the District Council’s own pot of Government Flood Recovery Grant funding.

The cash will be divided into 3,000 vouchers worth £5 each to provide children aged five to 16 who were affected by the July floods with some light relief in the form of sports coaching activities.

Scott said: “There were many children affected by the flooding of more than 1,150 properties across the District, some even having to move out of their homes.  I thought this was a great way to offer them access to our coaching scheme free of charge.  If we get lots of applications for vouchers from a particular location, we may even be able to put on a specific session in that area.”

Scott, with the help of a team of coaches, runs the Sports Club, a school holiday sports coaching scheme which provides fun, structured sessions in safe surroundings on each day of the school holidays. 

It delivers a wide range of sports and activities – from hockey to football - for all ages and abilities with an emphasis on fair play and learning.

With a cost of £10 per day, the vouchers could be redeemed two at a time in order to access the scheme free of charge. Alternatively, the vouchers could be used towards an annual £20 membership for the Sports Club which would entitle the member to a 50% reduction in daily fees.
