Batsford Arboretum - one of the 50 best spring gardens to visit

Places, Features Add comments

Batsford Arboretum, near Moreton-in-Marsh in the Cotswolds, is No. 4 in the list of the 50 best spring gardens to visit for a grand day out, compiled by the The Daily Telegraph Gardening section.

Batsford Cherries by Mike TaylerSpring time at Batsford is a wonderful time. Swathes of daffodils and narcissi carpet the ground and then the native flora of Batsford appear in great profusion - primroses, cowslips, oxslips, violets, forget-me-nots and wild garlic and many other wild flowers which thrive in the specially managed areas.

Overhead are two of Batsford’s most spectacular collections: the Flowering Magnolias and the Flowering Cherries.
The Magnolias are one of the most beautiful and stunning of plants when in flower in that the large flowers often open before the leaves. Batsford has almost 100 Magnolia Cultivars and they form an important part of the spring colour although some do flower in the summer.

Batsford is home to the National Plant Collection of Japanese Flowering Cherries (Prunus (sato-zakura group). This collection is an important one giving a mass of spring colour with the blossoms and unfurling leaves. Sato-Zakura means village cherry alluding to the fact that these plants have been bred and cultivated in Japan for centuries. As a group they are often very beautiful. They are also very variable in size, colour and flower form. The earliest cultivars bloom in March and the last in May giving a long season of colour.
Late May is signalled by the flowering of the handkerchief trees, so named from the large white bracts that surround the true flowers. The bracts up to 20 cm long provide a stunning display.

The Arboretum is open daily in season February to November from 10.00. Last entry 16.45.
