“At the Sign of the Rainbow: the work of Margaret Calkin James”
at Court Barn Museum,Church Street, Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire.
Margaret Calkin James was a talented designer and painter who lived and worked in Chipping Campden during the Second World War.
She was born in 1895 in West Hampstead, London and studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts 1914-1916 specialising in calligraphy. She won the Queen’s Scholoarship for her calligraphy in 1915. She also studied at the Westminster School of Art. In 1920 she set up the Rainbow Workshop in what had been the Art Department of the Central YMCA London during the War and of which she had been Head.
A prolific calligrapher, graphic designer, textile printer, printmaker and water colour artist, her clients included London Transport - Posters, Jonathan Cape - Book Jackets, The Curwen Press - Pattern Papers, The BBC - Programmes and Booklets and the GPO, for whom in 1935 she designed the first Greetings Telegram. She died in 1985 aged 90.
The Exhibition will feature her Textiles, Posters, Prints, Paintings and Calligraphy.
Her work was celebrated in the publication - At the Sign of the Rainbow- by Betty Miles with a Foreword by Alan Powers which was first published in 1996 and, until recently, was out of print. A new edition, revised and enlarged, and in full colour throughout is now available.
As part of this Exhibition there will be a talk by her daughter, Elizabeth Argent, on Saturday July 26th at 4.30pm.

Do you know if it is possible to purchase a copy of Margaret Calkin James’ “Rainbow Workshops” poster? I have searched the net but haven’t found one.
