Places, Features, Events Add comments

Date: July 9, 2008

Saturday 26th July 6.30 pm, Toddington Railway Station, Gloucestershire
Toddington based heritage railway, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, is laying on a special steam train with a jazz band send off in aid of the cancer charity, Maggie’s Cotswolds. The excursion leaves Toddington at 6.30pm on Saturday 26th July and travels to Cheltenham Race Course, via Winchcombe, before making a leisurely return journey.

There can hardly be a more pleasant way to support such a worthy cause than steaming through glorious countryside on a summer evening.
Passengers will enjoy a scenic twenty mile round trip, with the added attraction of an on-train bar. Ticket prices also include a raffle and a children’s quiz, and there will be a special performance by the ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’ jazz band at Toddington Station.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, which is run entirely by volunteers, will not be making a charge for laying on the special train. All the profits from the evening will go directly to Maggie’s funds.

Maggie’s fundraising co-ordinator Christiane Dickens enthused “I am very excited about the upcoming event at the GWR in aid of Maggie’s.

Maggie’s Cotswolds will bring much needed care and support to the thousands of people who are touched by cancer in their lifetime and this event will help us make the Centre a reality.”

Maggie’s Cotswolds will be a calm, uplifting drop-in centre where anyone affected by cancer can go whenever they want. Maggie’s professionally-staffed centres are used at the time of diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond. Each facility offers emotional and psychological support, information and other forms of guidance and advice. Everything is free-of-charge.

The new centre will lie at the heart of the Three Counties Cancer Network, a short walk from the Cheltenham General Hospital. The Three Counties Cancer Network serves over one million people in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, South Worcestershire and parts of Powys. Over 5,400 new cancer cases are diagnosed in the region annually. Maggie’s Cotswolds will be there for all these people and those close to them.

Tickets are priced at £15 for adults, with children under 16 charged half fare. These can be purchased at the station, or in advance from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway (01242) 621405, or via Maggie’s Website www.maggiescentres.org. There is plenty of free car parking at Toddington Station, where the tearoom will stay open for refreshments until shortly before Maggie’s Express departs.
