Cotswold summer of fun forecast at Corinium Museum

Features, Events Add comments

Date: July 16, 2008

A range of fun activities for families will take place at the Corinium Museum in Cirencester during the summer holidays.

The first of several fun-filled events will take place on Thursday July 31st, when museum staff hold the ‘Unlocking Portraits’ workshop at the Park Street venue.

This event, which runs from 2pm-3.30pm, aims to unlock the meanings behind old portraits and each family attending will be able to use this new knowledge to produce their own family pictures.  The cost is included in the Museum’s admission charge.

Following on from this, the museum hosts another children’s activity, ‘The Victorian House’ on Friday August 1st, a holiday workshop where children can get up close to a variety of artefacts and make their own decoupage pot to take away.  This event is aimed at 7-11 year olds and runs from 10.30am-12pm.  Tickets cost £4, or £2 for season ticket holders/Friends of the Corinium Museum, and please wear old clothes.

Another event, on Tuesday August 5th, will give children the chance to find out more about the ‘Poulton Bronze Age Hoard’, a collection of gold now housed at the Corinium Museum since being discovered in 2004.  This session is aimed at children from 9-11 years old and is from 10am-11.30am.

Finally, on Tuesday August 12th, children can go ‘Through the Roman Keyhole’ and discover what Roman homes were like.  They can also design and make their own piece of Roman inspired ‘wall plaster’ during the session, which runs from 10am-11.30am.  Tickets cost £4, or £2 for season ticket holders/Friends of the Corinium Museum, and please wear old clothes.

The Museum’s drop-in events are increasingly popular, so come and find out why! Families can arrive, pay £1 per person, and try a simple make-and-take activity, working in the fabulous Roman Mosaic Gallery.  Peg Doll making is on offer on Wednesday July 30th, creating mosaic pictures from shiny paper is on Wednesday August 6th, and you can try your hand at brass rubbing on Wednesday August 13th.  All these activities take place from 1pm-3pm and children must be accompanied by an adult.
