Building work is continuing at three affordable housing sites in the Cotswolds, despite the recent ‘credit crunch’ affecting building sites throughout the country.

Cotswold District Council currently has affordable housing sites at Bourton-on-the-Water, as well as at two sites in Tetbury, and the Council believes that affordable homes could be available in the New Year on at least one of these sites.

At the Bloor Homes scheme at Bourton Chase, just outside Bourton on the Water, a total of 74 homes are being built. Of the whole scheme, half of the homes (37) will be affordable, divided between 25 rented properties and 12 going into shared ownership. Twenty-one of the affordable homes on this site have already been completed.

The two sites in Tetbury are also well advanced. At Hampton Street, 16 affordable homes are currently being constructed as part of a larger 35-house development, and will be available from December. Eleven of these one, two and three bedroom houses will be available to rent, while the other five will be offered as shared ownership.

In addition, at The Retreat site, there will be 19 affordable homes, which will be available for both rent and shared ownership. Some of these are available now, with more available from December.

Cllr Carol Topple, Cotswold District Council’s Portfolio holder for Community and Corporate Development, said:
“As a Council we are acutely aware that in these difficult financial times, the continued provision of affordable homes is paramount. The majority of affordable housing provision in the District is provided through the planning process, so it is vital that we endeavour to secure the maximum number of affordable homes on each development site through the Section 106 process. In addition we are looking at new and innovative ways to increase the availability of affordable homes if at all possible.”

The provision of affordable housing is one of Cotswold District Council’s three priorites over the next four years, under the ‘Supporting Communities’ banner.
