Places, Features, Events by Tony Leave a Comment »

Tuesday 29th April - Saturday 17th May 2008 Fosse Gallery Fine Art, Stow-on-the-Wold
A new Exhibition - Family Matter - Paintings by Mick Rooney, RA. Mick is not a typically English painter. Although his artistic antecedents embrace the narrative, not to say literary traditions of our national art, they also look to the broader horizons. He is an eclectic whose subject is the human condition:to this endlessly renewing disaster area he brings a sharp eye and a pawky humour.

June Redfern, On the West Coast, Watercolour, (c) June RedfernSaturday 10th November to Friday 30th November - Fosse Gallery Fine Art Stow-on-the-Wold

This is June Redfern’s second solo exhibition at the Fosse Gallery Stow-on-the-Wold.

Born in St Andrews, Fife, she studued drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art from 1968 to 1972. Her solo exhibition “Real Lives” in 1981 at the Third Eye Centre Glasgow exhibited realist paintings influenced by her teaching experience in the 1970’s in a school in Leith. She taught at Cardiff College of Art from 1983 to 1985 and later in 1985 she became Artist-in Residence at the National Gallery London where her paintings from this period were exhibited in 1986.
June has work in a number of private collections in Europe, Canada, USA and Ireland. She has also appeared on BBC2’s “Oil on Canvas” series and has exhibited in many major commercial galleries.

The work of this dedicated artist has succeeded in adding another dimension to the phrase “Expressionist Art.” The canvases may be small or large but her ability to install maximum impact remains profound.

Make Bronze Age jewellery at Museum session

Features, Events by Adam 2 Comments »

Silver Wrist Workshop (c) Corinium Museum 2007Master the art of Bronze Age metal working at an adult day session being held in Cirencester later this month.

Keen metal workers are invited to the Corinium Museum in Park Street on Saturday November 17th, where they can make a beautiful wrist torque from pure silver, using the same technology used in Bronze Age England.

Metal smiths in the Bronze Age (1000BC) developed a surprisingly high level of skill in bronze and gold working, using twisting and forging methods to make wrist and neck torques. At this workshop, participants will use these same methods to make their own wrought silver wrist torque, complete with twisted body and tapered ends.

Working with pure silver rod and artist Neil Burridge, they will explore forging with stone tools, experiment with different twisting techniques and experience common problems found with work-hardening or heat-treating certain metals.

Pure silver is rarely seen today, being much softer to work. As it does not tarnish and always returns to the soft, white colour of the moon, one can understand why some ancient peoples valued it as highly as gold.

The day school will run from 10am-4pm and tickets cost £45 per person, including materials and tea or coffee. Lunch is not included, and booking is essential.

For more details, to book a place, or to find out about other events, please call Helen Arbon on 01285 655611 or email museums@cotswold.gov.uk

Master mosaic making at Moreton session

Places, Features, Events by Adam 1 Comment »

Mosaic Mirror (c) Debbie Stirling 2007Put your creative skills to the test in Moreton on the Marsh this month when the Moreton Area Centre hosts a mirror-making art event.

The single day session - which takes place on Tuesday November 13th – will allow keen pupils to make their own mosaic mirror using pieces of broken china, porcelain and other materials. To add a personal touch, artists can bring along any special bits and bobs they wish to include in their designs, while local artist Debbie Stirling will be on hand to offer help and advice.

The pupils will also learn how to cut and fix china to create their own personal piece of art work which they can take home with them. The finished mirror could then hang in a favourite room of the house, or perhaps be given as a Christmas present.

The session runs from 10am to 4pm and tickets cost £35 per person, which includes materials and tea or coffee, although lunch is not included. Booking is essential and anyone interested should contact the Moreton Area Centre on 01608 650881.

For more information on this and other events taking place, please contact Helen Arbon at the Corinium Museum on 01285 655611.

Autumn Show at the Where I Fell in Love Gallery - Shipston-on-Stour

Places, Features, Events by Tony Leave a Comment »

Where I fell in love gallery exhibitionSunday 14th October - Sunday 18th November, Where I Fell in Love Gallery

Bruno Dauvin has gathered together exhibits by the following four leading British artists for his Autumn Show.

Ceramicists Emma Rodgers and David Jones, Painter Anuk Naumann and Woodturner Mike Scott “Chai”, all leaders in their respective artistic fields.

Emma Rodgers is a Wirral based artist who has been modelling ceramics since an early age.She studied at Wolverhampton University (as a student of David Jones) and since graduating has exhibited worldwide including the Victoria & Albert Museum , Royal Academy of Art, S.O.F.A. Chicago and The William Zimmer Gallery California. Her work has received local and international acclaim, The National Museums Liverpool have purchased her work for their collection and she has been short listed for the Liverpool Art Prize 2007.

Her figures are amazing. She has modelled monkeys, cats, hares, birds, cats, dogs, lizards and bulls. Emma has recently started to experiment with different materials such as bronze and she has also started to make human figurines that other pieces are added to including feathers and pieces of jewellery.

David Jones has been a Senior Lecturer in the University of Wolverhampton for the past fifteen years and is currently Leamington based. His Raku fired ceramics have been exhibited and are in public and private collections in Europe, Japan, Korea and the USA.
Raku is a form of Japanese pottery characterised by low firing temperatures, lead glazes and the removal of pieces from the kiln while still glowing hot. Raku is considered the traditional method for creating bowls for the Japanese tea ceremony.

Anuk Naumann was born in Bristol but is now based at Great Rollright in Oxfordshire. Her grandfather was an artist and he and the rest of her family have given her much inspiration for her artistic career. After experimenting with various media she chose to work with water-colour paints, acrylic and other mixed-media techniques. She has exhibited at many leading galleries throughout the UK and her work has been included in several Harper Collins art books. She will be exhibiting paintings of one of her favourite areas - Provence.

Mike Scott “Chai”is a highly respected Oxfordshire based woodturner who has been producing one of a kind wood vessels since 1985 and is known as one of the pioneers of freestyle woodturning. His approach is intuitive, exploiting the characteristics of the wood by turning, sandblasting, texturing, carving and the addition of other found objects or materials. He has exhibited widely in the UK, USA and Germany and his work is in many public and private collections.

Mike aquired the name “Chai”, which he uses to sign his work, which is a shortened version of a Sanskrit word meaning “awareness” or “consciousness” given to him by his then Indian guru.

Lucy Pratt Exhibition at the Fosse Gallery Stow-on-the-Wold

Places, Features, Events by Tony 1 Comment »

(c) Lucy Pratt. Wild Gladioli, Ivy CottageSaturday 13th October - Lucy Pratt, a year of visual pursuits

The latest exhibition at the Fosse Gallery is paintings by Lucy Pratt. Lucy is one of the true Impressionist English painters working today. Her colourful scenes are often painted “en plein air” (in the open air) capturing her direct reaction to each subject. Each painting is keenly observed and the images of the people shown are constantly moving and enjoying themselves whilst being painted with a hint of humour that the artist manages to impart to her pictures.
This style has been very successful and Lucy has pictures in various private collections worldwide

Her exhibition at Fosse Gallery Fine Art continues until Saturday 3rd November.
