A fascinating loan exhibition of ten centuries of monastic treasure gathered over the years by the Benedictine monks at Prinknash Abbey is on show at Simon Chorley, Art & Antiques, Prinknash Abbey Park, Gloucestershire, GL4 8EX. The exhibition will include precious jewellery, textiles, chalices, paintings and furniture. The objects date from the 11th Century to the 20th Century.

Cotswold MP sees window of opportunity for rail redoubling

Cotswold MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown yesterday called an adjournment debate on the subject of the redoubling of the section of single track railway running from Swindon to Kemble. The MP called for the debate after the Office of the Rail Regulator (ORR) announced on the 5th June that they would not provide funding for this scheme in the period 2009-2014, subject to a consultation period which closes on the 4th September 2008. Bench makes it’s mark at Simon Chorley Art & Antiques

The highlight of Simon Chorley’s fine art sale on Thursday 26th June was undoubtedly Lot 665, an Irish early 19th century. While the seat had suffered some damage and a poor varnish, it ticked enough of the right boxes to realize a sale topping £26,000 against an estimate of £1500-£2000.

Saul Canal Festival 2008 – Working to Restore the Cotswold Waterways

Friday 4th July- Sunday 6th July – Saul Canal Junction, Frampton-on-Severn, Glos, GL2 7LA
The Saul Canal Festival is about restoration. A concept forged over thirty years ago with the formation of the Stroudwater Canal Society. The event is designed to attract media attention, people and funds to facilitate the re-establishment of the link between the rivers Thames and Severn. The event takes place at Saul Junction, an unusual “waterway crossroads” where the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal intersects the soon to be restored Stroudwater Navigation.
The Mission – “Helping to bring Cotswolds Waterways back to life by raising funds in an entertaining and educational way”

Cotswold MP responds to mixed report from the ORR

The Office of the Rail Regulator (ORR) yesterday published their Periodic Review for 2008 and the results are a mixed bag for the residents of the Cotswolds.
The good news is that the ORR is in support of the scheme to re-double the Cotswold railway line. Unfortunately the plan to re-double the Swindon to Kemble line has not been included.
