The decision not to install a double rail track between Swindon and Kemble is a bitter blow to the Cotswolds, District Council Leader Cllr Lynden Stowe said today.

Toddington based heritage railway, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, is laying on a special steam train with a jazz band send off in aid of the cancer charity, Maggie’s Cotswolds. Cotswold MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown yesterday called an adjournment debate on the subject of the redoubling of the section of single track railway running from Swindon to Kemble. The MP called for the debate after the Office of the Rail Regulator (ORR) announced on the 5th June that they would not provide funding for this scheme in the period 2009-2014, subject to a consultation period which closes on the 4th September 2008. The Office of the Rail Regulator (ORR) yesterday published their Periodic Review for 2008 and the results are a mixed bag for the residents of the Cotswolds.

Saturday 24th May – Sunday 1st June – Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway “The Friendly Line in the Cotswolds” at Toddington, Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse Stations.
The 2008 Cotswold Festival of Steam marks four important milestones – 40 years since the end of steam on British Railways – 40 years since David Shepherd took delivery of “Black Prince” – 60 years since the nationalisation of Britain’s Railways – 100 years since the first through expresses ran over the Stratford-Cheltenham line between the Midlands and the West Country.
