Was Cheltenham a barometer of the antiques trade today? Well clocks were certainly in demand and although a mixed result overall, there were a number of really good sales, at The Autumn Antiques and Fine Art Fair held in association with LAPADA at The Centaur, Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire on 27th-30th November 2008, including a £35,000 Lowry drawing from Neptune Fine Art to a new client from Derby. Amid the turmoil in world financial markets there has been plenty of life in the auction market at Simon Chorley Art & Antiques. Perhaps some people are investing money in antiques as an enjoyable ‘safe haven’ while the banks are wobbling. Simon Chorley Art & Antiques kicked off their Autumn season with a fantastic price achieved at last week’s blockbuster auction (Thursday 18 September 2008) when a local Gloucestershire family sold a Louis XIV ebony, ivory and tortoiseshell cabinet, c 1650, for an astonishing £65,000 against an estimate of £20,000-£25,000. The highlight of Simon Chorley’s fine art sale on Thursday 26th June was undoubtedly Lot 665, an Irish early 19th century. While the seat had suffered some damage and a poor varnish, it ticked enough of the right boxes to realize a sale topping £26,000 against an estimate of £1500-£2000.
