Edward Sheldon Open Day – Shipston Independent Wine Merchants

Events, Features, Places by Tony No Comments »

Edward Sheldon

Saturday 22nd September 11.00 am to 16.00 pm

Edward Sheldon Limited are independent Wine Merchants who have been trading in Shipston-on-Stour since 1842. They have a range of over 700 wines and, although they specialize in French wines, their list incorporates a wide and diverse range from around the world.

Richard Badger, who started the business, became a vintner after first selling medicated wine at his pharmacy and in the late 1850s he passed the business to his nephew Edward Sheldon. The Company still occupies the original extensive cellars and offices.

On Saturday September 22nd from 11am until 4pm (postponed from August because of the devastating floods where they lost over 18000 bottles of wine – yes eighteen thousand!!- see picture at the end of this article) Edward Sheldon are opening their Shop, Cellars and Courtyard to give everyone the opportunity to see what a local independent wine merchant can offer.

There will be Guided Tours of the 19th Century Cellars at 12.00, 13.00, 14.00, 15.00 and 16.00 together with a Pig Roast, Wine Tastings, Pimms Tent, Special Offers, Music with Helen Porter and lots more.

Thursday September 20th – St. Edmund’s Church Shipston on Stour

Some 450 local volunteer readers will work in ten-minute shifts to read the entire Bible from The Old Testament – Genesis 1 to The New Testament Revelation 22.

This marathon reading is to help raise £30,000 to repair leaking windows in the church.

The complete reading is expected to take three days and three nights and will start at 16.00 pm on Thursday September 20th .

The star reader will be actress Hannah Gordon who is related to a churchwarden at St. Edmund’s and there are still some reading slots for volunteers to fill.

(Stop Press News Hannah will not be able to read in person as filming means that cannot get to the church in time. She will however send a tape of bible readings which can be slotted in as necessary)

Hannah is a well known Scottish actress who has appeared in many films and television series including The Persuaders and Upstairs, Downstairs. She was the female lead in the British sitcom My Wife Next Door with John Alderton and recently hosted the Watercolour Challenge television show.

St. Edmund’s Church is a community building and although it was largely rebuilt in the 19th Century it still retains its tower from the 15th Century and is a prominent landmark within the town of Shipston on Stour.

Sponsorship forms are available in the church or contact the organiser Susan Perry on 01608 662748.

Go on – fill a slot and help a good cause whilst enjoying the read and try out the pronunciation of some of those difficult names that you find throughout the Bible.

Up Date News The Reading raised more than £10,000 towards the restoration of the church windows.
