Toddington based heritage railway, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, is laying on a special steam train with a jazz band send off in aid of the cancer charity, Maggie’s Cotswolds. The 2008 Cotswold Festival of Steam marks four important milestones – 40 years since the end of steam on British Railways – 40 years since David Shepherd took delivery of “Black Prince” – 60 years since the nationalisation of Britain’s Railways – 100 years since the first through expresses ran over the Stratford-Cheltenham line between the Midlands and the West Country.

Wildlife and Steam on Tour at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway

This special exhibition by the renowned wildlife artist and steam locomotive owner David Shepherd is being held in aid of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation and combines his two passions – endangered wildlife and steam locomotives. Also operating over the GWR railway during the weekend will be David Shepherd’s own giant of the steam age – locomotive 9F 2-10-0 No. 92203 Black Prince which was one of the last steam locomotives to be built by BR.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway (GWR) is running a Spring Diesel Gala over the weekend with an intensive passenger and freight timetable. The GWR has one of the finest collections of heritage diesel locomotives in the country and there will be opportunities to ride behind a large variety of types between Toddington and Cheltenham Racecourse plus a special “Driver for a Fiver” opportunity.
